Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible for the scholarship?

    • The applicant must be a senior at Oak Creek High School located in Oak Creek, WI, who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, will graduate the year that the scholarship is awarded, and will be attending college the following academic year unless enlisted in the United States military.

  • Is the scholarship only available to graduating students at Oak Creek High School in Oak Creek, WI?

    Yes. The student must also identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

  • How do I apply for the scholarship?

    • Applicants must complete an application, which is available here on this website.
    • The application must be signed and mailed before the application deadline.
    • Application must be submitted with an essay that describes in 500 words or less how you made the Oak Creek High School a safe space for LGBTQ+ students. 
    • The Foundation will accept only mailed applications.
    • In respect to fairness for all applicants, no information other than the application and essay may be provided.
  • Can I send information other than the application and essay, such as letters of recommendation?

    • No. In respect to fairness for all applicants, no information other than the application and essay may be provided.
  • Does the Foundation verify the information in the application and essay?

    • Yes.
  • When does the application window open?

    • Applications will be accepted beginning on January 15th .
  • What is the application deadline?

    • March 15th . No extensions or exceptions will be made.
  • When is the scholarship recipient selected?

    •  April 15th .
  • How is the scholarship recipient notified?

    • The Foundation will contact the scholarship recipient by April 30th to notify them of the award.
  • What is the amount of the scholarship?

    • $10,000.
  • How is the scholarship paid?

    • The scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s college of choice via check that is made payable to the college for the benefit of the recipient.
    • The scholarship will not be paid directly to the recipient.
  • What can I use the scholarship money for? What are eligible expenses?

    • College tuition, books, room, and board.
  • Can the award be deferred?

    • No. The award will be paid to the college the following academic year unless the recipient is enlisted in the United States Military.
    • For example: An award made in 2024 must be used for the 2024-2025 school year. If a balance remains after eligible expenses, the recipient shall use that balance in the following school year(s).
  • I have not yet selected my college. Am I eligible?

    • Yes. The scholarship award will be paid directly to the recipient’s college of choice once that college is selected and provided that the recipient attends college the school year following the award.
  • Do I have to attend a Wisconsin college to qualify for the scholarship?

    • No.
  • What kind of college can the scholarship be used for?

    • The scholarship can be used for any type of college that is accredited by an agency that is approved by the United States Department of Education. This includes technical colleges, online colleges, private / public colleges, and private / public universities.
  • Do I have to complete a FAFSA to apply for the scholarship?

    • No. The scholarship is not based on financial need.
